What is the TSIA2?
This is the newest version of the TSI and an alternative to the SAT. It is related to College Board's Accuplacer. This college placement test of the Texas Success Initiative provides students an opportunity to demonstrate that they are college ready in Writing & Reading, as well as Math. The scores are valid for five years and they allow students to place into college-level course work in high school and in college. When students are not college ready through TSIA, SAT or ACT scores, they may need to take remedial course work in college.
Being college ready means students can enroll in college and be able to take the classes they really need and that count toward their major.

The Husky TSI challenge
The Husky TSI Challenge is currently underway. Students needing to demonstrate college readiness are being scheduled for the TSI Boot Camp on a Saturday and TSI testing on a Wednesday.
Seniors will be tested in March, Juniors in April and Sophomores in the ladder part April and first part of May.
Students should check their email for important notifications and updates.
How are students identified for participating in the Husky TSI Challenge?
Students who have never taken the SAT or have not earned minimum passing scores on the SAT will be the focus of the Husky TSI Challenge. Students will be scheduled for the TSI assessments needed, either ELAR (English Language Arts & Reading) and/or Math. The latest version of these tests have combined the Reading and Writing in one test. The TSIA 2.0 is part of College Board's Accuplacer, a placement test that measure the student's college readiness level. For graduating seniors this is extremely important, because being college ready through test scores is the difference between being placed in college-level classes versus remedial courses. Taking remedial courses requires extra time and tuition costs.
What does the TSI Boot Camp consist of?
The camp takes place on the Saturday before the students test on Wednesday. This is in-person from 8 AM until 12 PM at Chapin High School. The camp provides the student with practice resources on the Virtual Tutor of Edgenuity Blend. The system determines specific areas for improvement and tailors activities for the student to strengthen those skills. Students have access to a Math and English teacher for assistance. Students should continue to practice on their own until their scheduled test. The student is scheduled for an in-person practice session on a Saturday.
What does the TSIA2 consist of?
The tests are a series of computer-adaptive assessments in Reading, Writing and Math. Computer-adaptive means that the performance in one test questions will determine the difficulty level of the next. As the student moves through the test, if her or she gets one question correct, the next one will be harder. The more difficult the question, the more points it is worth toward the final score.
For the essay question, the computer-based program will automatically disable word processing tools like automatic capitalization and grammar functions. Students can make notes or write a rough draft on scratch paper.
The ELAR (English Language Arts & Reading) test consists of the following:
READING
•Literary Text Analysis (explicit information, inferences, author’s craft, vocabulary)
•Informational Text Analysis and Synthesis (main ideas and supporting details, inferences [single-passage], author’s craft, vocabulary [interpreting words and phrases in context], synthesis [paired argumentative passages])
WRITING
•Writing focused
•Essay Revision and Editing (development, organization, effective language use, Standard English conventions)
•Sentence Revision, Editing, and Completion (conventions of grammar, conventions of usage, and conventions of punctuation
The Math test assess the students' knowledge of Algebraic and Geometric functions, spatial and quantitative reasoning, etc. The students are provided scratch paper and the computer test has a built-in calculator for basic calculations.
For information of TSIA2 test scoring, please see file below.

TSI Testing
This testing opportunity is for juniors and seniors. Testing will take place either virtually or in person. You will be notified of a day and time to report for your test.
The TSIA (Texas Success Initiative Assessments) are used to determine if a student demonstrates college readiness through his or her Reading, Writing and/or Math skills. It is in the students' best interest to complete a diagnostic prior to testing through Edgenuity*. This allows them to identify areas where improvement is needed. There is also practice modules that the student can complete to target those areas. Please see below for instructions on accessing this program.
Aside from signing up to test, students must complete the PAAM (Pre Assessment Activity Module) prior to testing. If they have completed this in the past, they do not need to complete again. Below is the link to the PAAM. Students must enter their EPCC ID number and DOB as it is prompted in order to log in to the system. The EPCC ID should have been emailed to the student from the college after Apply Texas was completed.

Lower classmen:
Sophomores and juniors test each year usually in order to enroll in Dual Credit classes at Chapin HS (English 3, US History, Astronomy, Pre Calculus, Psychology and College Transition).
Graduating seniors:
Seniors who have not passed sections of the SAT or ACT are highly encouraged to sign up for sections of the TSIA. Passing scores on the TSIA can place the college student in college-level classes instead of remedial course work. Remedial classes cost the college student extra time and money, as well as delay him or her from taking the content classes needed in their major of choice. Students can also achieve college readiness by passing a college prep class (English or Math) at Chapin with a minimum of 75 each semester. This only applies to students planning on attending UTEP or EPCC.

Sophomore College Readiness
TSI TESTING & Dual Credit
Fall 2020
Sophomores will be administered the TSI tests in Writing and Reading.
Spring 2021
Sophomores will be administered the TSI test in Math if currently in Algebra 2.
This year, EPCC has generated ID numbers which students can use for TSI testing at our school. For the first time, students do not need to apply to the college to be assigned an ID number. However, this ID can only be used for testing. Students who have an ID number and who have completed the Pre Assessment Activity Module through their English 2 class, will now be able to test during the November 16 through November 20th window. Test results will determine the students' college readiness in Reading and Writing, which will allow our school to offer them course options that best fit their needs. Starting junior year, course options will either assist the student in becoming college ready or offer him or her the opportunity to participate in college-level course work for college credit through El Paso Community College.
Currently all TSI Assessments will be conducted virtually.
Available Dual Credit Courses:
English 3
US History
Pre Calculus
Astronomy
Psycology
College Transition

POST SECONDARY planning
Exploring the military-For students considering the military as an option, taking the ASVAB test is a good idea. This test is traditionally used to find out if the military is a good fit for the candidate, but it also serves a a career exploration tool for any student grade 10 to 12. The test covers academic preparedness and technical knowledge. Chapin usually offers the ASVAB twice a year. For 2019-2020, our campus offered it on three different occasions. If have not taken the ASVAB and are interested in joining the military, contact El Paso MEPS for information regarding testing at (915) 995-3200 (Military entrance Processing Station).
Applying to the institution-Check for admissions requirements as each program may be different. You will usually need to submit your transcript, test scores (SAT/ACT/TSI) and your proof of Meningitis to complete the admissions process.
Test scores-Your SAT and ACT scores indicate your college readiness. These are what we call "college entrance exams." The minimum SAT scores are 480 on the EBRW and 530 on the Math. For ACT, you must attain a 23 composite score and 19 on both English and Math. The TSIA is part of the Texas Success Initiative and the assessment serves as a placement for college courses in Texas. The minimum scores are 340 on the Writing, a 4 on the Essay, 351 on the Reading and 350 on the Math. Being college ready is important. this is the different between taking college-level courses and having to take remedial/developmental classes. These will cost extra time and money and tuition will likely not be covered by your federal financial aid. Scores must be sent directly from College Board or ACT.org For Texas colleges, you may contact their testing center directly to request your scores to be uploaded into their system from the TSI database.
